When the Disneyland Park opened its gate on April 12 1992 three different types of watercrafts plowed through the Rivers of the Far West: the big steam boats, the River Rogue Keelboats and the Indian Canoes. 
While the Indian Canoes have long been closed and the former landing area turned into Pocahontas' Indian Village, the smuggler's cove, from where the River Rogue Keelboats departed for their tours, remained closed but unchanged for years, since the keelboats were taken out of service. But now the smugglers are back!
Since last week guests are invited to explore the smuggler's cove once again and board the keelboat "Racoon" for a trip around Big Thunder Mountain, Wilderness Island and along the shores of the Rivers of the far West. The whole tour on the free floating boats takes about 20 minutes including load/unload procedure. Narration and quite a few jokes are provided by the castmember steering the boats - unfortunately in French only at this point.
Compared to the steam boats the keelboats allow guests to get closer to the sights along the Rivers of the Far West and enjoy a new perspective, but also to feel closer to the waters as the boat even hops over the small waves created by the bigger Molly Brown.
Currently the keelboat operate from 11.00 am to 6.30 pm but wait times can easily reach 40 to 45 minutes, so the smuggler's cove was closed around 5.50 pm last weekend to allow all guests in line to enjoy the ride. The lines might be even longer if more guests would know about the whereabout of the smuggler's cove - but then the smugglers made sure not too many do, by preventing the keelboats from being listed on the official park map.
At this point only one keelboat (the "Racoon") is in operation resulting in a very limited capacity, but a second keelboat (the "Coyote") is rumored to return to service shortly as well. But as other rumors state that it was damaged during training for the cast members this might depend on the progress and scope of necessary repairs.
Nevertheless: the return of the "Racoon" is not only greatly adding to the atmosphere of the Rivers of the Far West but also is a welcome addition for those guests enjoying their visit leisurely or plain interested in a trip down memorylane to the early years of Disneyland Paris.
